This workshop is hosted by both Sam and Alex of The Naked Midwives and Emma from LushTums Pregnancy Yoga. It is designed to give you practical information on initiating and sustaining breastfeeding and breathing techniques throughout labour and birth. The session will start by talking briefly about anatomy and physiology and the well-established benefits of breastfeeding for both mother and baby. We will discuss massage and hand expression (which you can start before baby is born), the composition of breast milk, how to hold baby, different feeding positions, how to look out for a good attachment and latch, feeding/sleep patterns, early relationship bonding, breast care, common problems and what support groups are available. This is followed by a demonstration of breathing techniques for the different stages of labour. This will show you how to slow the breath, focus attention on where the breath is going, and therefore utilising all the space within the body. This is a powerful tool to practice and understand and in doing so it will ensure you keep as clam and focused as possible throughout labour.
